George Cassens, the grandson of Hans, entered the automotive business in 1918 when he joined the Marine, Illinois-based John Brandes Garage as a sub-dealer. He went into the nearby towns of Worden, Hamel, and Edwardsville, eager to sell new Reo cars, and he introduced relatives and neighbors to the growing auto industry.
George kept a small stock of new cars in the Hamel showroom even though auto sales were slow. Dealers had to collect their automobiles from manufacturers as the automotive industry changed, which resulted in higher expenses. George and his sons streamlined their business and reduced costs by arranging for direct truck shipment, which proved to be a more effective solution.
A representative of the Dodge-Plymouth corporation met George in the winter of 1932 while they were looking for new dealerships in Edwardsville. They were hesitant at first since they did not know what the representative’s goals were, but after getting the facts straight, they decided to take on the new dealership, which started for business on June 22, 1933.
